Introduction
Getting your first job after university can be exciting. You have your degree, your CV is ready, and you’re finally stepping into the professional world. But knowing what you studied is different from knowing how to navigate the workplace.
Take Tony, for example. He was a recent graduate who was excited about starting his first job. He soon discovered that his degree had prepared him academically, but there were still practical skills he needed to develop.
Here are five skills that helped Tony adjust to his first workplace:
- Asking questions when instructions are unclear.
- Planning tasks and managing deadlines.
- Learning from feedback.
- Taking initiative.
- Staying open to learning new skills and tools.
1. Ask Questions When You Need Clarity
During Tony’s first week, his manager assigned him a task. Tony assumed he understood the instructions and started working, only to discover later that he had focused on the wrong thing. A simple question at the beginning could have saved him time.
You won’t understand everything immediately, and asking questions doesn’t make you incapable. Before starting a task, clarify the expected outcome, deadline, and any instructions you aren’t sure about.
The goal is to understand the work before spending time on it.
2. Learn to Manage Deadlines
Tony once left a task until the last minute because he thought he had plenty of time. Then the electricity went out, and his laptop battery started running low.
The unexpected disruption made an already stressful deadline more difficult.
Whether you’re working in an office or remotely, avoid waiting until the last minute. Break tasks into smaller steps, prioritise important work, and give yourself room to handle unexpected challenges.
3. Treat Feedback as an Opportunity to Improve
When Tony received corrections on one of his assignments, he initially felt discouraged. But after reviewing the feedback, he realized it showed him how to improve his work.
Your first job is a learning environment. Not every correction means you have failed. Pay attention to what the feedback is teaching you and apply it to your next task.
Improvement often begins with being willing to learn from what you got wrong.
4. Develop Initiative
After completing his assigned tasks, Tony often waited for someone to tell him what to do next.
Over time, he began using quiet periods to review his work, learn relevant tools, and ask how he could contribute further.
Initiative doesn’t mean taking on everything or interfering with other people’s responsibilities. It means paying attention, thinking ahead, and looking for appropriate ways to add value.
5. Keep Learning Beyond Your Degree
Tony eventually had to use a spreadsheet feature he had never encountered before. Instead of assuming someone had to teach him everything, he watched a tutorial, practised, and asked questions when necessary. Your degree gives you a foundation, but your career will introduce you to new tools, processes, and expectations.
The World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report 2025 highlights the importance of skills such as analytical thinking, resilience, flexibility, and technological literacy as workplaces continue to change.
You don’t need to learn everything at once. Start with skills that are relevant to your role and keep building from there. Your First Job Is a New Learning Experience
After six months, Tony realized that his biggest growth had come from learning how to approach unfamiliar situations. He had become more comfortable asking questions, managing tasks, receiving feedback, taking initiative, and learning new tools.
Your degree can help you get started, but your willingness to keep learning will shape how you grow in the workplace.
You don’t have to know everything before your first job. Start prepared, stay curious, and give yourself room to grow.
